Hello!!! Years ago my mom stopped buying soaps from the grocery store and started making them herself. Shortly after, she started to send them through mail in care packages and I loved them. I have very sensitive skin and a lot of the good smelly soaps out there were not very kind to my skin, but with these ones I was able to enjoy the best of both worlds! So when she came to visit me last year I asked her to teach me how to make them and I have been hooked ever since. It is so easy and there are so many possibilities that I cannot believe I didn’t start doing it sooner. I usually go for an oat bar soap with almond scent and today I am going to show you how to do them yourself.
MATERIALS
1 lb. of glycerin soap base
2 vitamin E capsules
1/4 tsp stearic acid
steel cut oats
almond essential oil
small spray bottle with alcohol
16 oz glass measuring cup
silicone mold (soap/cupcakes)
The glycerin soap base usually comes in a 2 lb. but for this soap recipe we only need one. So we are going to use a knife and cut the bar in two and store one of the halves away. Now we are going to cut our glycerin in small cubes (about a square inch) to facilitate the melting process.
For the melting process I use a 16 oz Pyrex glass measuring cup that I use exclusively for soap making.
Prepare your molds by spraying alcohol into each mold with the spray bottle. I like to arrange the molds on a small cookie tray before hand so I can move them easier. You can use soap molds, but I really like to use cupcake molds because I think they are the perfect size and come on a variety of pretty designs.
Melt the glycerin cubes in the microwave for 2 minutes, or until completely melted, stopping to stir every 30 seconds. It’s really important that you don’t allow the glycerin to boil.
Now you are going to add your favorite combination of ingredients to the glycerin. You have to do this really fast before it starts hardening, so I recommend to have all your ingredients ready before you start melting. My favorite combination of ingredients for soaps is steel coat oats and almond essential oil, and I always add a couple capsules of vitamin E (you just cut them open and squeeze the liquid into the mix).
After everything is blended, pour your soap mix on a silicone soap or cupcake mold. Finish your soaps by spraying a bit of alcohol.
You can let them rest on the counter, but I have zero patience so I always put them in the fridge to expedite the process. It doesn’t take long about 15-20 minutes to completely set.
After they are completely hardened, you can de-mold them and wrap them on cling paper for storage.
Look how pretty they turned out! If you tried this soap recipe or you have your own, please share in the comment section. I would love to see your creations!
